Acclaim for ‘difficult’ second book

Acclaim for Paul Torday’s new novel The Irresistible Inheritance of Wilberforce has come flooding in. The novel has been included twice in The Sunday Times “You Really Must Read” column, while Saga Magazine called Paul a “true original”.

Following glowing reviews in the Irish Times, Independent on Sunday and Metro (Four Stars), the Express said, “an exceptionally accomplished study of alcoholism ... it is supremely effective, for as we begin to uncover Wilberforce’s earlier life we also know how he will end up. The Wilberforce at the end of the book is unrecognizable from the man at the beginning: one with life, opportunity and hope ahead … Second novels are notoriously difficult to pull off but Torday has managed a near-masterpiece. His third is reputed to be even better. I can’t wait.”

The third novel is entitled Girl on the Landing and will be published next February by Weidenfeld & Nicolson.
