Salt and Emerald: A (Hesitant) Solo Voyage Round Ireland

Alastair Scott, world-traveller by backpack, bicycle and dogsled, takes to the water on a voyage of discovery round Ireland. Despite as assortment of yachting experience as a passenger, he sets off into some of the most challenging waters of Europe with just sixty miles of solo skippering to his name, and one successfully laid (and recovered) anchor. Over the next 1,700 miles he has to confront his fear of this temperamental ally – the sea – in tidal sluices, sandbars, the Atlantic swell of the exposed west coast and an injurious summer storm which leaves him, literally, singlehanded. Yet this book is much more than a personal adventure, it penetrates deep into people and place, Exercising a practised eye for the eccentric and wonderful, Alastair Scott explores Ireland past and present, and meets everyone from Fungi the dolphin and Dervla Murphy to pilgrims on the summit of Croagh Patrick.
