Osai’s Razor

An atmospheric, fast-moving, sharp-edged, debut literary novel about a young woman who becomes the head of a school of swordsmanship in 17th century Japan. This is a book that asks unusual questions about the nature of love, honor, duty and respect, and is a wonderful study of the relationship between teacher and student. While the spirit of the novel is faithful to its sources—the lives of the great sword masters and their esoteric Zen teachers—it is also influenced by Japanese samurai movies and manga.
